Book Blitz: The Boys of Summer by C.J. Duggan

The Boys of Summer by C.J. Duggan (Summer Series, #1) - New Adult Contemporary Romance - Publication date: December 17th 2012
It seemed only natural to nickname them the ‘Onslow Boys’. Every time they swaggered in the front door of the Onslow Hotel after a hard week’s work, their laughter was loud and genuine as they settled onto their bar stools. I peeked through the restaurant partition, a flimsy divider between my world and theirs. I couldn’t help but smile whenever I saw them, saw him ... Toby Morrison.

Quiet seventeen-year-old Tess doesn’t relish the thought of a summertime job. She wants nothing more than to forget the past haunts of high school and have fun with her best friends before the dreaded Year Twelve begins.
To Tess, summer is when everything happens: riding bikes down to the lake, watching the fireworks at the Onslow Show and water bomb fights at the sweltering Sunday markets.

How did she let her friends talk her into working?

After first-shift disasters, rude, wealthy tourists and a taunting ex-boyfriend, Tess is convinced nothing good can come of working her summer away. However, Tess finds unlikely allies in a group of locals dubbed ‘The Onslow Boys’, who are old enough to drive cars, drink beer and not worry about curfews. Tess’s summer of working expands her world with a series of first times with new friends, forbidden love and heartbreaking chaos.

All with the one boy she has never been able to forget.

It will be a summer she will always remember.

Warning: sexual references, and occasional course language.

Since I'm sure the description and lovely cover have made you curious...here are some excerpts for you to enjoy!

Excerpt 1
“Don’t you dare.” I grabbed his arm, pulling him backwards. His eyes darted to where my hand rested on him. I didn’t move my hand, I couldn’t physically bring myself to break the contact; all of a sudden there were no smiles, no jokes, just him and me and our space on the couch. I could only hear the music and be aware of the heat of his skin and the rapid rise and fall of my chest in this moment.
The only thing that snapped me out of my daze was Toby’s words which seemed low and raspy.
“Is Adam your boyfriend?” His gaze flicked over my face as he waited for my answer. My mouth gaped open; I couldn’t hide the fact I was dumbfounded by the question.
I blinked quickly and took my hand from his arm. I struggled to construct a legible sentence.
“Oh – um, no, we’re just friends, it’s not like that.”
His stony expression didn’t falter, didn’t reveal any kind of emotion. He was so hard to read, and I wanted to read him so badly. He gave a small nod and handed me the CD cover.
“Better go and make sure these guys aren’t cheating.” And without another word, he got up and headed towards the pool table.

Excerpt 2
Moon rays filtered through the windshield, giving the cabin an otherworldly glow.
Toby’s perfect teeth were illuminated when he smiled. “You know, you are the worst winner!” He shook his head. “Ever since you won the bet, you’ve been apologising. Just go with it, enjoy it, because I assure you, next time …” - he leaned closer - “… you will not be the winner.” He pulled back, smug.
I curved a brow. “Next time?”
He nodded. “I fully intend to redeem myself.”
“Want a chance to rebuild your shattered ego, do you? I bet you’re itching to fix my bike so you can be rid of me once and for all.” I shouldered him gently, teasing him as I would Adam. And then I realised what I had done; I had treated him like my friends. He looked down at his shoulder, then up at me. His eyes shadowed with untold meanings that I couldn’t read.
“What if I didn’t want to fix your bike?” he said in all seriousness.
“Why, is my company so stimulating that you can’t bear the thought of being without me?” I teased nervously.
I was aiming for light and airy, but something must have gone wrong with my delivery because Toby’s face went blank. He looked out into the lights of Onslow, ran his tongue over his bottom lip and sighed.

 Excerpt 3
As the engine churned dark water into white froth behind us, I thought about what we were about to do. I was about to embark on a day on the lake with Toby Morrison. If anyone had told me last week this was how I’d be spending my summer, I would have never believed them.
“Where to?” called Toby over the hum of the motor.
“McLean’s?” posed Sean.
“Too busy,” Ellie yelled.
“How about over Horseshoe Bend? Pretty secluded there,” I suggested.
Sean smiled wickedly as he moved to sit beside Toby. “You want somewhere private, do you, Tess? What do YOU have planned for the day?”
I blushed, horrified at what he thought I was suggesting.
“I just meant …”
“You heard the lady, Tobias, drive her around the bend.”

Override Blog Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway!

How Glitching Came About
[by Heather Anastasiu]

In the world I’ve created, glitches came about as a by-product of the Community attempting to control and enslave most of humanity. Ironically though, putting the emotion numbing V-chip hardware in people’s heads for several generations created something the Community never expected—the human brain began to adapt around the hardware, and in doing so, activated dormant DNA to create unusual abilities.

In Jurassic Park, for example, the scientists breed all the animals to be female, but still, as Jeff Goldblum’s character says, ‘Life finds a way.’ And indeed, that’s what happens, since because of the amphibian DNA used, the animals begin to adapt and change sexes so they can reproduce. That blew me away when I first read the book that that was even possible. Environmental factors and pollution have caused other extreme adaptations and mutations in animals within several generations. So I played with the idea of how humans might adapt around the hardware implanted in their heads.

Only about 5% of our DNA is actively used for coding. The other 95% is called non-coding DNA or ‘dormant’ DNA. Some people suspect that the dormant DNA is what makes evolution possible and that if we could tap into it, we could discover new abilities such as telekinesis and psychic ability.

Now, I don’t know if that’s true or not! This is not a post about my personal beliefs or anything. As a science fiction writer, I was simply intrigued by the possibilities of all these things and how they might work in my story. And I do think there’s enough evidence of the wild possibilities of adaptation in the natural world to create a suspension of disbelief.

Also, frankly, I’ve loved superhero stories since I was a kid, and I wanted to write a telekinetic heroine who could kick some serious butt ;)

About Override:

Zoe is free. She has escaped the enslavement of the Community, disconnected from the hardware that had controlled her every thought and emotion, and evaded capture by the Chancellor intent on killing her. She is finally free, but she is far from safe.

Zoe and Adrien hide themselves from detection at the Foundation, an academy that trains teen glitchers to fight in the Resistance movement. Together, Zoe and her new team of superhuman fighters must risk their lives to rescue other glitchers and humans from the Chancellor's control. Challenges abound at every turn, and Adrien, who has become silent, distant, and tormented by his visions of the future, only adds to the growing certainty of defeat. But worst of all, as Zoe's team fights against impossible odds, distrust and betrayal leads to the terrible discovery that their greatest threat could already be lurking behind the safe walls of the Foundation.

Full of high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Heather Anastasiu's Override is an exciting continuation of this popular young adult trilogy.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? (90)

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? at One Person's Journey Through a World of Books

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, is a bookish meme hosted by One Person's Journey Through a World of Books, where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It’s a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list. So hop on over to Journey and join in...and leave a comment here so I can check out what you are reading.

Books I Read Last Week:

I wasn't a huge fan of this one, but I did manage to finish it for my class. :P I really enjoyed the characters in this one, but the story itself was pretty boring, and I didn't really like the way that it was written.

I actually really enjoyed On the Road! It's a pretty dense read, so it was a task to finish in time for class, but I managed and really liked what I read. :) Now I'll have to watch the movie they just made last year when it comes out. ;)

This is a novella that takes place before Crewel, and it is briefly mentioned in the book. It's available in ebook or on Tor's website. I liked getting to read this one though...it always makes me feel like I know insider information when I get to read novellas like this. :)

I finally read Ruled, and I loved it! :) I always enjoy getting to read Leon's perspective from this series, so this was really nice to read...I only wish it had been longer. ;) haha

I LOVED this one!!! :D I'm still kind of upset over it though. The story was amazing and everything, but this book really tested my emotions and I was kind of a wreck while reading it...which makes sense since Zoe was the same way. :P haha I'll stop there though because I plan on reviewing this one and I don't want to say it all now, but I loved it and that's what you really need to know. :P lol

Reading Now:
I managed to finish all of my other books last week, but I didn't quite make it to Boundless. It's my top priority when I get free time this week though! :D

This is another book for my Proletarian Literature class. It's not bad so far...pretty violent though.

-------------------------------------------

So, that's what I finished last week and what I'm reading now.
What are you reading???

Check out One Person's Journey Through a World of Books to see what other people are reading. :)

I got a pretty nice variety, and I decided that I wanted to try reading some autobiographies...so I got Jane Lynch's and Russell Brand's! I'm definitely looking forward to those! I also got an ebook of Ruled and finished it...it was awesome (just like I thought it would be! :D).

Review: A Midsummer's Nightmare by Kody Keplinger

Source: Received a copy of the book from Hachette Book Group Canada for an honest review.
Publisher: Poppy
Release Date: Already released.
Number of Pages: 304 (Hardcover)

Blurb from Goodreads:
Whitley Johnson's dream summer with her divorcé dad has turned into a nightmare. She's just met his new fiancée and her kids. The fiancée's son? Whitley's one-night stand from graduation night. Just freakin' great.

Worse, she totally doesn't fit in with her dad's perfect new country-club family. So Whitley acts out. She parties. Hard. So hard she doesn't even notice the good things right under her nose: a sweet little future stepsister who is just about the only person she's ever liked, a best friend (even though Whitley swears she doesn't "do" friends), and a smoking-hot guy who isn't her stepbrother...at least, not yet. It will take all three of them to help Whitley get through her anger and begin to put the pieces of her family together.

Filled with authenticity and raw emotion, Whitley is Kody Keplinger's most compelling character to date: a cynical Holden Caulfield-esque girl you will wholly care about.

Prior to reading A Midsummer's Nightmare, I had yet to meet a Kody Keplinger book that I didn't love...and A Midsummer's Nightmare was no different! I was quickly caught up in Whitley's story, and in her life and didn't stop reading until I'd finished...even though I had class later that day. :P

I'm always amazed with the characters that Kody Keplinger writes. They have flaws, but are people that you can relate to; ones that you understand and are able to get to know through their stories.  Whitley is incredibly flawed, but you can't help but sympathize and connect with her. Even if your life is nothing like yours, you can understand where she's coming from.

I also love how realistic her characters and dialogue are. One of the things I always notice when reading one of Kody's books is the fact that their conversations are so authentic. They're ones I that I can imagine having with my friends, or overhearing on the bus or in the class, and I find that so refreshing! Too often, you'll read something that looks great on paper, but if you read it out loud, the dialogue sounds so weird...but with her books, they fit seamlessly with what people actually say....or at least what people within her characters' age groups would say. :P Since the dialogue is so realistic, I find that it adds a lot of authenticity to the characters, too, and I love that. I really enjoyed Whitley as a character. She goes through a lot in A Midsummer's Nightmare, and I really enjoyed seeing her change as the story progressed...I also loved that characters from The DUFF popped up in this one...it was awesome!! :D I'm a huge fan of character cameos. ;)

I adored the romance in this book, but I think that the progression of the characters was the aspect that I enjoyed even more. Yes, I totally LOVED any romance that I got, but I especially loved seeing Whitley and Nate help each other through things. :)

I loved A Midsummer's Nightmare, and I'd recommend it to all contemporary fans, especially ones who enjoy flawed, yet appealing narrators...and who like romance, there's that, too. Also, I'm pretty sure all Kody Keplinger fans will love this one just as they've loved her previous books. ;)

Have you read A Midsummer's Nightmare, or any of Kody Keplinger's other books?
Thoughts???
