[by Heather Anastasiu]
In the
world I’ve created, glitches came about as a by-product of the Community
attempting to control and enslave most of humanity. Ironically though, putting
the emotion numbing V-chip hardware in people’s heads for several generations
created something the Community never expected—the human brain began to adapt
around the hardware, and in doing so, activated dormant DNA to create unusual
abilities.
In Jurassic Park,
for example, the scientists breed all the animals to be female, but still, as
Jeff Goldblum’s character says, ‘Life finds a way.’ And indeed, that’s what
happens, since because of the amphibian DNA used, the animals begin to adapt
and change sexes so they can reproduce. That blew me away when I first read the
book that that was even possible. Environmental factors and pollution have
caused other extreme adaptations and mutations in animals within several
generations. So I played with the idea of how humans might adapt around the
hardware implanted in their heads.
Only about 5% of our DNA is actively
used for coding. The other 95% is called non-coding DNA or ‘dormant’ DNA. Some
people suspect that the dormant DNA is what makes evolution possible and that if
we could tap into it, we could discover new abilities such as telekinesis and
psychic ability.
Now, I don’t know if that’s true or
not! This is not a post about my personal beliefs or anything. As a science
fiction writer, I was simply intrigued by the possibilities of all these things
and how they might work in my story. And I do think there’s enough evidence of
the wild possibilities of adaptation in the natural world to create a
suspension of disbelief.
Also, frankly, I’ve loved superhero
stories since I was a kid, and I wanted to write a telekinetic heroine who
could kick some serious butt ;)
About
Override:
Zoe is free. She has escaped the enslavement of the Community, disconnected from the hardware that had controlled her every thought and emotion, and evaded capture by the Chancellor intent on killing her. She is finally free, but she is far from safe.Zoe and Adrien hide themselves from detection at the Foundation, an academy that trains teen glitchers to fight in the Resistance movement. Together, Zoe and her new team of superhuman fighters must risk their lives to rescue other glitchers and humans from the Chancellor's control. Challenges abound at every turn, and Adrien, who has become silent, distant, and tormented by his visions of the future, only adds to the growing certainty of defeat. But worst of all, as Zoe's team fights against impossible odds, distrust and betrayal leads to the terrible discovery that their greatest threat could already be lurking behind the safe walls of the Foundation.Full of high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Heather Anastasiu's Override is an exciting continuation of this popular young adult trilogy.
Heather Anastasiu is the author of the
young adult sci-fi novel, GLITCH (St. Martin's Press/Spring 2012). She recently

Hmm, telekinesis would be a pretty cool glitch! I haven't read these books yet but the DNA aspect intrigues me. thanks so much for hosting an awesome giveaway!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely telekinesis
ReplyDeleteI would want the ability to communicate with animals and even interpret dreams, both would serve a cool purpose :) Thanks for the sweet giveaway, would love to read these books! I was watching Jurassic Park when I saw this posting, very cool that Heather mentions that movie as an example :)
ReplyDeleteKara
I'm not sure, I haven't read these either but I'm sure there are some pretty awesome glitches out there. Although, every blessing could also be a curse so careful what you wish for!
ReplyDeletetelekinesis would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteHmm, these glitches sounds pretty cool. I don't think our non-coding DNA codes for telekinesis or something, but it sure is a cool idea for a book!
ReplyDeleteLove to have the ability to read minds!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Leanne
I would love to read minds or be able to see into the future
