[Review] SHATTERED TRUTHS (Lies, Hearts, and Truths, #3) by Helena Hunting (writing as H. Hunting)

Source: Received an egalley/ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Release Date: August 29, 2023
Number of Pages: 400 (ebook)

DESCRIPTION

The first time I met Winter Marks, I almost took her out with my Jeep.
To be fair, she came out of nowhere.

I flirted with her, and she flipped me off and disappeared into the woods on her bike.
But she left me a souvenir: a single hockey skate.

Seemed to me that divine intervention shouldn’t be ignored.

She was my icy Cinderella and I would be her Prince Not-So-Charming.

Winter was more than just a sassy, badass hockey-playing hottie.
She’s stuck in a prison of a life. And I’m the perfect escape.

Neither of us expected to fall.
Or for the truth to shatter us.

REVIEW

Ever since it was first announced I've been eagerly waiting for SHATTERED TRUTHS, and it was just as lovely and wonderful as I hoped it would be! I can already tell that it's going to be one of my top reads this year!

I've been a huge fan of Helena Hunting's for quite a while now, so it should come as no surprise that I love her Pucked series, All In series, and now her Lies, Hearts, and Truths series, too! I have absolutely loved how we've continued to see so many beloved characters, and I've adored just how much we've seen this whole little book universe grow! BJ, the hero of SHATTERED TRUTHS, happens to be the son of Randy and Lily from Pucked Over...and since they're my fave of the Pucked couples, you can bet I was super excited for his book...and boy did it deliver!

BJ and Winter were absolutely amazing main characters! I loved them apart, truly adored them together, and was rooting for them the entire time...their chemistry was off-the-charts, their banter was so good, and it was really lovely to see how they grew throughout the story...I actually forced myself to put this book down because I wanted to try to savour it...and sure enough, I wasn't ready for it to end and could've read 100s more pages about these two! They were an absolute delight! It was also lovely to see all of the fantastic side characters--Helena always writes such lovely friend and family groups and they honestly just keep getting better because it feels like we're part of their family at this point.

I highly recommend this book, the full series, and basically every single other book that Helena has ever written because I truly find her writing never disappoints me! SHATTERED TRUTHS had me laughing, smiling, tearing up, swooning and feeling all the feels, and I loved every single minute of it!

[Review + Release Day] BITTER SWEET HEART (Lies, Hearts, and Truths, #2) by Helena Hunting

Source: Received an egalley to participate in blog tour.
Also purchased a Kindle copy.
Release Date: September 1, 2022
Number of Pages: 446 (ebook)

DESCRIPTION

From the outside looking in, I live a charmed life: hockey legend for a father, my own promising future in the league, a great family, awesome friends. It’s not untrue, but it’s not quite that simple either.

My dad’s advice has always been to make hockey my number-one priority—at least until I make it to the pros. So, going into my senior year of college, I have a plan. I’ll put in the effort required to pass my classes, play hockey like my life depends on it, and avoid relationships. All I have to do is stay focused on the end game, and I’ll walk away with a degree and into a career in the NHL.

It should be easy.

But when a woman literally floats into my dock, just before summer ends and my senior year begins, I can’t resist one last hookup. What harm could a one-night stand do? It’s not like we even exchanged numbers.

Everything is fine until I run into her on campus.

It’s a big school. I should be able to avoid her.

Except she happens to be in my class.

And she’s not a student.

She’s my professor.

REVIEW

I absolutely loved BITTER SWEET HEART! I've been eager for Maverick's story ever since we got to see bits and pieces of him in LITTLE LIES! I loved his humour, and I loveeeeed his relationship with his sister, Lavender...so I was extremely excited when Helena Hunting first announced that Mav's book would be next in the series...and let me tell you, he did not disappoint!

Maverick was just as wonderful as I hoped he'd be! I loved his humour, his heart, and it was wonderful seeing him front and center...and it was a pleasure seeing him find love! Clover was wonderful, too! I knew a tiny bit about her because of teasers that Helena posted, but it was lovely getting to know her and I loved how she and Mav complemented one another! Their chemistry was absolutely on fire, too...definitely on the very, very steamy side...and I have to admit that I loved that about it! ;) Along with their chemistry, the banter and communication between Mav and Clover was something that I really appreciated. They were so honest with their feelings and the conversations they had throughout the book made me so happy. It was phenomenal to get to see them grow together!!! I also loved seeing so many of my fave characters from the Pucked, All In, and Lies, Hearts and Truths series!!! I already can't wait for future books...particularly BJ's! ;)

Overall, I loved BITTER SWEET HEART! It was steamy, and packed full of heart! It made me laugh, cry, swoon, and I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend both it and the first book (which takes place concurrently with this one), LITTLE LIES! If you're looking for a fantastic contemporary romance that features wonderful characters, a phenomenal and passionate romance, and a story that will keep you on your toes, then I think this is the perfect book for you! I'm even happy to share my new book boyfriend, Maverick, with you! ;)

Release Date: January 5, 2020

DESCRIPTION

It took me a long time to realize I shouldn’t date the women I work with. It cost me three tattoo guns, a job, five motorcycle tires, and I’m not even counting the t-shirts I never got back.

It feels different with Frankie but she comes with a little daughter and a crap load of other baggage.

I’m not the guy you take home to your parents, let alone your child. Even with everything against us, I can’t help but think maybe it could work out–then I remember who I am.

REVIEW

Awww this was such a sweet and sexy finish to the series! I’ve loved seeing Frankie and Jax banter and antagonize each other in the previous books, but seeing them fall in love was even better!!!

As always, I loved seeing our fave couples in their friend group make their appearances in this book. I really do think that Piper and Rayne excel at flushing out friendships and family dynamics in their stories, and A Co-Worker's Crush shows that perfectly--their group just fits together so, so well, and I really love when friends become found families. :)

I loved getting to know Frankie and Jax better in this one. We've gotten to learn quite a bit about Jax's past in the previous books, but I loved getting inside his head, and Frankie has always kept her distance from the group a bit, so I loved getting to see more of her. She's fierce, strong, and she's one of those people you definitely want on your side--so is Jax for that matter. I also absolutely adored Frankie’s little girl, Jolie! And now that we got to see more of Frankie and Jolie, I also really loved Jolie’s grandma, Sandy. She was so sweet and supportive, and it reminded me of all of the memories I'm grateful for having with my own grandmas. :) I also love seeing Jax with Jolie...sooooo many sweet moments in this one, and that's all I'll say because I think you'll want to experience them yourselves. ;)

Overall, I absolutely adored A Co-Worker's Crush! It’s bittersweet to have this series coming to an end, but I love that this was the story it finished on—much like Frankie, Jax drove me crazy when he first appeared, but he definitely won me over. ;) The tension between this couple has been building so long, and I loved seeing it all come together! This book can definitely be read as a standalone, but I do think you're missing out on some excellent banter and tension from previous books if you start with this one first. ;P I'd recommend A Co-Worker's Crush and the rest of The Rooftop Crew series to readers who love contemporary companion series that are sweet, sexy, funny, and feature amazing friendships and wonderful relationships! ;)

Release Date: December 1, 2020
Number of Pages: 237 (ebook)

DESCRIPTION

She was always the one.
Or so I thought.
Turns out my instincts were dead wrong.

Years ago I was faced with the choice between two women. Both were perfect in opposite ways. One was carefree and against commitment. The other was a woman you’d bring home to mom.

I was young, naïve and stupid. I’m sure you can guess who I chose.

Now, I’m older, wiser and know what the hell I want.

So, when the same two women pop back into my life it’s my chance for a do-over. But they flipped the script. Just like me, they want different things now. Leaving me with one choice—convince the woman I want that she wants me too.

REVIEW

Oh boy, this was one dramatic read! I've really come to love the variety in Piper and Rayne's Rooftop Crew series--they've been doing a great job with keeping the tropes fresh and the stories are all super different from one another. Most of all, I absolutely adore their friend group! I've been eager to read Knox's story for a while since he's been the quiet, mysterious one in the group up until now, and we definitely got to see some depth underneath his uniform. ;)

Part of the fun of this book is that the heroine is a bit of a mystery...is it Knox's ex...is it someone else? He's getting a do-over...but until you start reading you're not going to know who. ;)

Since I'm trying to keep Knox's love a mystery...I'm going to keep this rather brief and say that I loved her! I loved getting to know her, loved how she and Knox grew closer and fell in love, and I really loved seeing how she fit into their friend group. Knox's parents were also super precious and I loved them, too. When it comes to Piper and Rayne's books, I'm always a sucker for the friend groups, and the family moments, and all of those lovely dynamics, and this one did it super well.

Overall, I thought that THE DO-OVER was great! It was sexy, sweet, and I loved seeing Knox and his mystery lady fall in love! I was a little bit conflicted going into this one because Knox is a cop, and with everything that's gone on this year I honestly do feel a bit iffy reading romances where the heroes (or even the heroines) are police. That did kind of damper my excitement for this one, but all in all, I did enjoy it. A few other little things kept me from absolutely loving this one, namely Dylan's behaviour during parts of it and a tad too much drama for my personal taste, but it was an exciting, fun read and I definitely recommend it to contemporary romance fans who like second-chance stories, especially if you like them to have some twists and turns along the way.

REVIEW

My heart is so, so full after finishing LITTLE LIES! I went into LITTLE LIES knowing it would feature the kids of some of Helena Hunting's previous heroes and heroines, and I also new it was new adult and that it was going to be angst-y...and I have to say that's a pretty fair assessment, but it was also sweet, endearing, and while it tore me up at first, it definitely put me back together and wrapped me in a big warm hug! By the end it had me grinning and smiling so, so much. :)

I'm a huge fan of Helena's Pucked series and her All In series, so I've been eagerly waiting for this one as soon as it was announced ages ago, and it was completely worth the wait! I loved Lavender and Kodiak so much! I also loved seeing all of the younger Pucked/All In kids, too, and I really loved getting to see snippets of their parents. At this point I've been a huge fan of Helena's for years now, and it's been an absolute pleasure following all of these characters for so long. Love, love, loved this one!

Overall, I thought that LITTLE LIES was phenomenal! Helena's writing is superb, fresh, and hilarious as always! The story was compelling, heartwrenching, emotional, and I was utterly and completely hooked! I loved that LITTLE LIES featured flashbacks from Lavender and Kodiak's childhood alongside of their present storyline, and that it alternated POVs between the two of them, as I loved seeing how their past lead them to where they currently were...and I always love getting to see both characters' sides to a romance!

All in all, I absolutely adored this book and I highly recommend it! If you're already a fan of Helena Hunting, then definitely read LITTLE LIES as it is truly one of her best books so far! If you're new to Helena Hunting's writing, then I'd recommend LITTLE LIES if you're a fan of contemporary romances that are angsty, sweet, sexy, and funny!

EXCERPT

The front door swings open, and the never-ending nightmare that is this day smacks me in the face like a long-expired sausage. Kodiak stands in the doorway wearing only a pair of swim shorts, wet hair sticking out all over the place, water dripping on the damn floor. But God, is he ever glorious. Muscle layered over muscle, thick biceps flexing as he holds the doorjamb, a mischievous grin popping the dimple in his left cheek.

My heart seizes and gallops. I miss this version of him: the one that smiles and doesn’t hate me.

He ruins everything a moment later by bellowing, “Who’s fucking in the driveway?”

His gaze moves to Dylan, who looks as horrified as I feel, but as it shifts to me, his smile drops and my stomach tightens.

“You should really go,” I tell Dylan.

“I’ll see you around.” He disappears into his car and barely has the door closed before he’s backing out of the driveway and screeching down the street.

I adjust my backpack on my shoulder and head for the house, steeling my spine and my nerves because Kodiak is still standing in the middle of the doorway, his face a mask of indifference. I try to brush by him, but he stays where he is, making it impossible.

I sigh, exhausted beyond belief. I just want to go upstairs and have a good, cathartic cry. I try to mirror his apathy. “Can you move so I can get into my house?”

His brow furrows as his eyes move over my face. He lifts his hand, like maybe he’s thinking about touching me. There’s no way I can handle that. I jerk back and swat his hand away. “What are you doing?”

     “Your lip is bleeding.”

“Don’t act like you actually give a shit, Kodiak.”

“Tell me what happened.” His voice is low and soft, and for whatever reason, that makes me even angrier, so I lash out, wanting to wound him the way he keeps wounding me.

“You, Kodiak. You happened, and you ruined my goddamn life. Now get the hell out of my way.” I elbow past him, almost tripping over several sets of running shoes.

I head straight for my bedroom and lock the door behind me. I slide down the wall until my butt hits the floor and close my eyes, taking deep breaths.

I imagined the concern in his voice.

I imagined the pain that sat heavy behind his eyes.

We see what we want to, not the truth, especially when it hurts.

REVIEW

Oh my. Somehow 9 books and 3 novellas in, and I’m still not ready to let go of this series! I absolutely love all of the Baileys so much and this series has been a true pleasure to read! The deeper you get into this series, the more you grow to love them all, and at this point I really do feel like a part of their family at this point...so I'm definitely sad to not have any "Bailey" stories after this, but luckily Piper and Rayne have already hinted at future cameos in their upcoming series, The Green Family, which happens to take place one town over from Lake Starlight in Sunrise Bay featuring Grandma Dori's bestie, Ethel's family. :)

Okay, now that I've let out that little bit of sadness, let's talk about this novella! First, I loved that with this novella we get to see a glimpse into the future for all of the Baileys! I especially loved that it centred around our beloved Grandma Dori...she definitely deserves to be celebrated and surrounded by all of her loved ones! It was so neat to see the kids getting older, and so many of them are so grown up now!!! It honestly went too quickly for me, and I could've read way more, but I still really enjoyed getting a peek at all of the kids' lives and seeing their parents' from their POVs...which was just as hilarious as expected! haha

Overall, I thought that OPERATION BAILEY BIRTHDAY was short, sweet, and the perfect treat for any fan of The Baileys series! While the series has come to a close, I'm hoping that we’ll be seeing lots and lots of cameos and glimpses into their lives through the upcoming The Greene Family series...fingers crossed that we get some cameos in every book! haha I also wouldn’t be opposed to a spin-off series for the great grandkids. ;) If you're a fan of this series already, you definitely don't want to miss this one, and if you haven't started The Baileys series yet, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves small town contemporary romances! I have to admit that it's been a very long time since I've committed to a long series, but I did it easily with The Baileys because I genuinely couldn't wait for each book and every single one of them was such a delight to read!

Source: Received an egalley to give an honest review.
Also purchased Kindle copy on Amazon CA.
Release Date: October 13, 2020
Number of Pages: 271 (ebook)

DESCRIPTION

She’s got two strikes against her.
Her name is Erickson and her parents own The Bagel Place.

It wasn’t always that way. When we were nine, we were best friends. But then a feud between our dads ripped their successful business apart—and my best friend was ripped away too.

Our paths were bound to cross again. When both our families vie for the same spot on a Food Channel’s reality show, the producers decide to change the format, aligning us as allies.

In order to get our parents to agree to work together, Evan asks me to pretend to be her boyfriend, but I dare her to up the ante—be my fiancée. Fake fiancée… obviously.

As usual, I didn’t think things through. Turns out our parents have a lot of demands neither one of us expected. And all those demands lead to things feeling more real than fake.

REVIEW

Ever since we were first introduced to Seth and Evan in the earlier books of The Rooftop Crew series, I've been so, so eager to get their story! I loved the idea of a forbidden love between two former childhood best friends torn apart when their family bagel businesses drove them to become reluctant rivals! I've also loved both Seth and Evan from the moment that they were each introduced in the previous books...and the little hints that they both might have some hidden romantic feelings all along have had me hooked forever, so getting to read their story in OUR STAR-CROSSED KISS was absolutely wonderful, and I loved it so much! :D

First, I thought that Seth and Evan were fantastic! I loved them apart--Seth is hilarious and I loved learning about his photography more, and Evan was so strong, and I loved getting to see more of her beyond just the family business! Their banter and snark was absolutely fabulous, as was their chemistry! I loved that we got to see a friendship reconnect...and I really loved seeing their relationship evolve into more, and it was wonderful seeing them fit as a couple into their group of friends, too! I also loved that we got to see quite a bit of family-time in this one since both Seth and Evan were close to their families...and I'm especially glad that we got lots of Mrs. Andrews (Seth's mom) because she always makes me laugh whenever she makes an appearance! :D

Overall, I thought that OUR STAR-CROSSED KISS was sweet, sexy, funny, and an absolute joy to read! I loved seeing Seth and Evan go from rivals to friends/allies to lovers, and I loved every moment of their story so, so much!

[Blog Tour Review] RULES FOR DATING YOUR EX (The Baileys #9) by Piper Rayne

Source: Received an egalley to give an honest review.
Also purchased Kindle copy on Amazon CA.
Release Date: September 1, 2020
Number of Pages: 301 (ebook)

DESCRIPTION

If your ex arrives in your hometown eighteen months after you walked out on him while you were eight months pregnant, follow this short list of rules before you give him a second chance.

Rule #1 – Don’t stand in the way of your brothers who want to rough him up.

Rule #2 – Don’t meet him for coffee and agree to allow him to meet your daughter.

Rule #3 – Don’t drool when your daughter falls asleep on his chest for the first time. It’s just your ovaries talking.

Rule #4 – Don’t let him hold your hand. While we’re at it, no hugs, no kisses on the cheek… just no physical contact in general. That only leads to remembering better times.

The last one is the most important…

Rule #5 – When you find yourself needing someone’s help and you’re tired of always asking your family, don’t let him be the one who’s there for you.

Because all those good qualities of his will suck you right back in and you’ll have no chance of fighting your feelings, especially now that he’s ready to be a father to your daughter.

REVIEW

I can't believe we're already on Rules for Dating Your Ex, the ninth and final full length book in The Baileys series...it's been an amazing ride, and I've loved all of these books so much!!! I've truly loved seeing all of the Bailey siblings find love, and I've really loved seeing how their family has grown and changed throughout the books. Sedona and Jamison are actually the couple that we've seen snippets of right from the start and their second chance romance has been building for a while now...and it was so worth the wait!

Rules for Dating Your Ex would definitely work as a standalone, but I did love knowing the characters already from the previous books in this series. In fact, I loved that we've gotten to see Sedona and Jamison in the early books, and that we've had seen a bit of where they were at throughout the past books. It made it so much sweeter to get their actual story, and I'm so happy with what Piper and Rayne put together. It was so fantastic to see even deeper into their past, and to see them get closer and overcome what tore them apart. Jamison has grown so much since Sedona walked away from him, and it was so lovely to see the two of them come together for their daughter.

Overall, I thought that Rules for Dating Your Ex was wonderful! While I'm sad that this series is drawing to a close, I've loved it every step of the way! I also love that while this wraps the last full length story in The Baileys series (there's a novella coming in the next little while though in case you hadn't heard yet :D), we're still going to get to see bits of Lake Starlight when Piper and Rayne release books in their upcoming planned series, The Greene Family, which takes place in Alaska in Sunrise Bay...one town over from Lake Starlight! It's such a relief that we still may get to see some of our favourite Alaskans in cameos in future books! If you love romantic comedies that are sweet, sexy, and super heartwarming, but haven't started The Baileys series yet, then I highly recommend you check it out! Whether you start right from the start, or dip in-and-out based on your favourite tropes, I think you'll absolutely love it! :)
