It's Monday, What Are You Reading? (35)

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? at One Person's Journey Through a World of Books

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, is a bookish meme hosted by One Person's Journey Through a World of Books, where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It’s a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list. So hop on over to Journey and join in...and leave a comment here so I can check out what you are reading. All links on book titles go to Goodreads. :)

Books I Read Last Week:

I keep finding these on NetGalley, and I think they're pretty awesome actually. I'm not a huge graphic novel fan, since I haven't really read any, but I do like these. They're funny, and the characters are pretty awesome. I love the whole idea of their boyfriend is a monster too. Like the first one, her boyfriend started to become a zombie, then in the next one, her boyfriend was Frankenstein...and in this one, I'll just say her boyfriend bites, like the title says. ;)

This was my first time reading anything by Jennifer Echols, and I really liked it! I totally got hooked into this book. I got it from Simon and Schuster's GalleyGrab, and I couldn't stop reading....I seriously stayed up until at least 3am reading Love Story...and I had to work later that day, but it was all good. I didn't have to work until 4pm. :P

I read this one for a blog tour, and I really liked it. It had some great characters, wicked action sequences, and an awesome storyline and history. It's definitely worth checking out. :)

Reading Now:
I'm totally loving this series! I'm trying to read Dust and Decay slowly though because I want to make it last as long as possible...this probably won't last long though. I'm not always that patient when it comes to reading a book! haha

The 19 Dragons just came out this week, and I started it the other day. I haven't finished it yet though. I should finish it this week though. :D

After the Party was in Simon and Schuster's GalleyGrab and I decided to give it a go. I'm about half way through it, and it's not bad. Definitely not the usual book I read, but I am enjoying it. I'm loving how it's organized too, it's very mysterious for a contemporary book that isn't really a mystery. :)

Books I Want to Read This Week:

*I'm gonna leave this one open-ended this week! I wanna finish what I've started first. I'm so glad that I actually finished some stuff this week though. I was getting worried that I wouldn't get any reading done now that I'm working. :P

And what are you reading???

Check out One Person's Journey Through a World of Books to see others are reading. :)

Happy Reading!!!

My Review:

With an amazing cover, and an intriguing description, I definitely expected to like The Last Archangel. I am thrilled to say that I wasn't disappointed. It was action packed, and filled with an incredibly interesting back story involving things like the lost city of Atlantis, the destruction of Pompeii, and other intricacies involving Giants, angels, and demons.

The one big thing that the description from Goodreads fails to mention is Eden. Eden is a mortal woman who goes through tonnes in this book...and I mean tonnes! I won't spoil it for you though because it is some juicy stuff. To be honest, she wasn't my favourite narrator ever, and I definitely preferred Xandir's parts, but in her situation I can sympathize with how she reacted. At the same time, sometimes I just wanted to smack her. In the end though, I think she came out of it stronger, and judging by the cliffhanger ending, I think she'll have other books to make up for not being the strongest of characters when it came to handling her life choices.

Now onto Xandir. He was awesome! Not always the smartest (but he did have his genius moments lol) or the most patient, and definitely rash at times, but when it came down to getting things done, he was definitely the person to do it. His swords, for justice and mercy were so neat! I love how they're represented on the cover too! I loved reading the parts of The Last Archangel where he narrated. While, I liked Eden's parts, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see things through Xandir's POV. I liked Jarom too, or Lil' Halo as Xandir called him, he was pretty awesome, and I loved seeing him evolve through his adventures. Just in case anyone is curious, Jarom's a cherub...yup, like Cupid! :D

I thought that The Last Archangel was an awesome story, and it definitely kept me up late at night reading. I encourage everyone who likes a story filled with action to give it a read. Especially readers who like stories that have action and aren't just all about the battle, but about the journey and the evolution that it takes to get through it, too. In fact, this book kind of reminded me of Greek epics in that way. Xandir took on a task and had to go through stages to complete it, kind of like Odysseus on his way back home to Ithaca (not exactly the same, but it had a similar feel),...and as a reader you're lucky enough to get to tag along for the ride :D

Review: Intern With the Vampire (Vampire General #1) by Kit Iwasaki

Source: Received ebook from publisher for an honest review.
Publisher: 1889 Labs Ltd.
 Release Date: Already Released.

Blurb from Goodreads:
Human medicine is easy. On her first day at Grace General Hospital, new intern Aline Harman risks vampire infection, demonic possession, and having her heart torn out of her chest... and this from her colleagues.

Juggling transhuman politics only becomes more difficult when a patient's life is at stake. With a zombie to resuscitate and a mermaid in critical care, Aline has her hands full. At least the doctors are good-looking.

The best way to describe Intern with the Vampire, is a hospital drama where the patients and doctors are supernatural beings rather than humans. The beginning of this book had me cracking up, and I definitely smiled. It reminded me of pretty much every hospital drama or soap opera that I've ever watched. Within the first page two characters are in a supply closet...and they aren't looking for supplies.Of course, since they're doctors they got interrupted by a page. It was definitely entertaining though, and so was the rest of the book. :)

I thought that Intern with the Vampire was an interesting mix of paranormal and the familiar hospital drama. I thought Aline was a fantastic character, and the majority of the book was in her point of view, however, there were a couple of chapters that had different narrators. The switch to different narrators was a fantastic device. It added some extra tension, and I loved that we got to learn what happened to the one character through a patient's wife's eyes rather than through the doctor operating on him, it made seeing what happened to the patient become even more personal and I loved that. :D

I think that lots of people would love this story. It was funny, refreshing, and definitely unique. :)
The next book in the Vampire General series, Slash and Burn, comes out later this month (July 2011). I can't wait for Slash and Burn...Intern with the Vampire ended on with a killer cliffhanger. :P

Happy Reading!!!
