The Top Ten Ways to Catch and Release Boys by Jillian Nichols
Boy catching is serious business, and like any good business, a girl’s
gotta have her policies and plans in place. Or maybe it’s more like a
sport. Regardless, there are rules. My best friends and I created
boy catching out of need to have a little fun without being bogged down in
emotionally draining relationships. No fighting or meeting parents or
awkward break-ups. If you follow these simple tips, you’ll be catching
and releasing boys like a pro in no time.
1. Avoid loose change. You know the guys that creep on you on
the dancefloor? The ones that came alone, waiting for a girl to grind up
on? Throw those back early on.
2. Ask for his number. If you want to stay in charge, you
have to be the one with the digits.
3. Never catch from the inner circle. So that guy in your
econ class is cute, and your co-worker at the coffee shop has nail-worthy abs?
Enjoy that candy from the sidelines, ladies. It can be nearly
impossible to successfully release someone you see several times a week.
You’ve been warned.
4. Buy your own drinks. Nothing’s sexier than an
independent woman, and you’ll never feel bad for walking away.
5. If you can stand it, go back to his place instead of yours.
This is a safe way to make sure he doesn’t show up on your doorstep
unexpected, but it’s also a gamble. Have you seen some of guys’ dorms?
And word to the wise, if he lives in a frat house, just say no.
6. Schedule early classes, or at least get up and pretend to
have class. If he’s still there in the morning, start freaking out when
the alarm goes off. He’ll be confused all the way to the door.
7. Keep a pic of a wedding dress on your phone. Show it to
him when you want him to leave.
8. Your roommate is your best friend. A pissed-off roommate can
send a guy heading straight to the door. Even if you get along with your
roommate, establish a plan of action for the clingy types.
9. Fake a call to your mom. Want to get rid of a guy fast?
Pretend you’re calling your mom to dish on your night, throw in lots of
talk about “the one” and “fate.” Cast meaningful glances at him. If
he doesn’t seem phased, tell “your mom” to hold on for a sec and ask him what
he’s doing for Christmas, add “my mom wants to know.”
10. Don’t let him fall asleep. Use any or all of the above
to get him out before his mind hits the snooze button. Other easy ways to
keep him from crashing: hide your pillows, spill a glass of water on the bed,
two words: footie pajamas.
From the author:
When I was asked to think about the top 10 rules for boy catching, I
had to channel Jillian, the leading expert on the sport. I think some of
her advice is spot on, but some of it sounded like a warped Maxim article.
So if you’re thinking of getting into boy catching, keep in mind that
you’re not only playing with your head, you’re playing with your heart, too.

Synopsis:
Twenty-one year-old Jillian Nichols only has one rule when it comes to boys: catch and release. Boy-catching isn't just a game for Jillian and her friends, it's a lifestyle. After all, boys might be good for a dance or a drink and certainly a little under-cover action of the scandalous variety, but expect much else and you're bound for heart ache.
So when her best friends and fellow boy catchers start dropping like flies junior year, Jillian is determined to keep boys in her bedroom and out of her heart. Until she meets Liam McAvoy, the kind of guy that sticks around to make waffles and who can't—or perhaps won't—take a hint.
Study abroad student Liam doesn't want to be another notch on Jillian's bedpost. Actually he has much more interesting ideas for Jillian and her bedposts, but his student visa's set expiration date means he can't promise her forever. That doesn't mean he's going to walk away from the challenge of discovering why Jillian is hell-bent at keeping people at a distance.
Before long, neither is sure who is catching who—or if they're playing for keeps. Jillian knows one thing though: falling in love will not only break the only rule of boy-catching, it could also break her heart.
