Review: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Source: Received an egalley from the publisher through Edelweiss.
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release Date: Already Released.
Number of Pages: 352 (Hardcover)

Description from Goodreads:
Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl's journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
As soon as I read the description for Cruel Beauty I knew that I just had to read it. I have always loved Beauty and the Beast...and I'm definitely a self-proclaimed Disney junkie, so this book totally screamed "READ ME!!!" to me! Sure enough, as soon as I started Cruel Beauty I was hooked!! :D I loved the story, the characters, and the world-building was absolutely amazing. :D I was also pleasantly surprised to figure out that Rosamund Hodge blends mythology into the story of Beauty and the Beast, too, because I'm also a huge mythology fan...seriously, this book was perfect for me and it lived up to and greatly exceeded any expectations that I had for it!

While the main character, Nyx, isn't the most likeable character, she is incredibly easy to relate to. Who hasn't been jealous or angry because they felt they had been mistreated? My guess is that almost everyone has...I know I sure have! Nyx's situation is something that's pretty impossible to relate to, but it's still incredibly easy to sympathize with her. I think her fierceness also makes it hard to dislike her, even though she's quite abrasive.

Ignifex, the "Beast" of this story, is another character who comes off as completely horrible, but he grows on you...boy, does he ever grow on you. At first, all you see is the monster that Nyx has heard of and known her entire life, but despite Ignifex's flaws (and he definitely has them), he is endearing and he has some great qualities...he also definitely cares about and trusts Nyx, which is a good and bad thing. :P I loved getting to see both Nyx and Ignifex let their guards down though, and seeing them grow closer was wonderful! You couldn't help but fall with them as their relationship changed, and I loved that! :D

Not only were the characters and story amazing, but so was the writing!!! I swear, Rosamund Hodge is a goddess herself because her writing was good enough for me to want to worship it! I cannot wait to read more of her work in the future because I found her writing to be fresh, addictive, and beautiful! Seriously...it was so, so, so good! :D

Overall, I absolutely LOVED Cruel Beauty! It's definitely one of my favourite reads in 2014 so far, and I have a very strong feeling that it's going to stay at the top of my faves list for the whole year! I'd recommend this one to fans of fairytales, mythology, and retellings! I also think if you love your love interests to be a bit on the dark side, and your heroines to be flawed that you'll love it, too! :D

Have you read Cruel Beauty yet?
If you haven't...do you want to?

Review: Salvage by Alexandra Duncan

Source: Received an egalley from publisher through Edelweiss.
Publisher: Greenwillow
Release Date: Already Released!
Number of Pages: 520 (Hardcover)

Description from Goodreads:
Ava, a teenage girl living aboard the male-dominated deep space merchant ship Parastrata, faces betrayal, banishment, and death. Taking her fate into her own hands, she flees to the Gyre, a floating continent of garbage and scrap in the Pacific Ocean, in this thrilling, surprising, and thought-provoking debut novel that will appeal to fans of Across the Universe, by Beth Revis, and The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood.
I must admit that what first caught my attention with Salvage was its stunning cover...but once I started to read the book, it was the story that truly won me over. Nowadays, most books come in trilogies or series, so when I found out Salvage was a stand-a-lone, I was both pleasantly surprised, and also a tiny bit disappointed because part of me would have absolutely loved more of the world that Alexandra Duncan has created! :P I'll just have to settle for reading absolutely everything that Alexandra Duncan writes in the future now I guess. ;)

One of my favourite aspects of Salvage was the world-building! It was wonderful, so flushed-out and vibrant, and extremely fascinating to read about! I also really enjoyed learning about the ships that Ava grew up with, and I loved reading how Duncan re-imagined our world. That's one of my favourite aspects of dystopia: seeing how our modern world has changed and what similarities or differences exist between the fictional world and our own...and Duncan did that very, very well! :D

The characterization was also amazing!! Ava was wonderful, and I loved that she played two very different roles throughout the story. Aboard the merchant ships, she was knowledgeable and was the source of information for the reader, but when she came to Earth, she was just as clueless about everything as we were, and I thought that created an interesting dynamic. It also allowed for an extremely wonderful case of character progression, one that I truly loved seeing. Instead of just passively going on throughout the story, Ava changed soooooo much! I was so proud of her by the end of Salvage...she's one of those protagonists that I'd love to know in person because she was remarkable!

Salvage also seriously played with your heartstrings! Throughout the book, your emotions will be severely tested! I felt so much while reading it!! I laughed, I cried...I was heartbroken, elated, proud, and so much more!  Now, I'm not going to go into a lot of detail, but the ending of the book was definitely the most emotional part for me. I found it both heartbreaking and rewarding...and again, I was so proud of Ava, but I also hurt so much for her! For me, the emotional aspect of Salvage is what really pushed this book from something that I enjoyed to something that I absolutely loved and will never forget. Salvage quickly dragged me into the story, and it kept me so emotionally invested that I really didn't want to stop reading...at all!

Overall, Salvage was a wonderful story! It was imaginative, and inspirational. It's one of those books that I know I will definitely be reading again, and that I'll never forget because Ava, and her story, are truly unforgettable! I'd recommend Salvage to readers who love to see a character come into their full potential...and if you like stories that affect your emotions, you'll definitely love this one! :)

What do you think?
Does Salvage sound like something you want to read?

Authors Are Rockstars Tour: Heidi Kling Guest Post & Signed Postcard Giveaway!

Why is Heidi Kling a Rockstar, you ask?

First, Heidi is more than just an amazing author, she's an awesome person, too! She happens to be one of the easiest and funniest people to talk to. You can often find her on Twitter, talking away about her favourite things...including TV shows, like The Vampire Dairies (which she'll mention a bit in her post ;D haha), and she's very welcoming and includes everyone in the conversation. Second, she's a Rockstar because of those amazing writing skills that I already mentioned, and she's very open to trying out new, intriguing ways to share her stories with her readers. :D

While her first YA book, Sea, was written the traditional publishing way, her newest series, The Spellspinners of Melas County, is something new entirely. She's one of the authors for a publisher called Coliloquy and her books are what you would call "interactive fiction" meaning that the base of the story is there, and so are the choices, but you get to make the decisions that lead the main character through the book.

The first book in her new series, Witch's Brew, was actually the first interactive book I'd ever read and I loved it! Heidi crafted a story that makes you feel in control, but also takes you on an effortless journey with the main characters, Lily and Logan. She also created two characters that you really want to know more about...and in the sequel to Witch's Brew, The Gleaning, the story just got even better!

So, Heidi is a rock star to me because she tells amazing stories, she's incredibly friendly...and I love that she loves her "guilty" (or not so guilty :P) TV pleasures just as much as I do! ;D

Now onto Heidi's fantastic guest post, where you can see just how much of a Rockstar she really is...I've also left the topics that I gave her in the post and put them into italics just so that you could see the very difficult choice I gave her. ;)

Guest post choice between these three topics:
  1. Creating a modern "choose you own adventure" (i.e. interactive fiction)
  2.  Vampire Diaries (since I know she's a huge fan of the show like I am...and I'm open to this being whatever she wants)...maybe as an inspiration post, or guilty/not-so-guilty pleasure, or hot YA book dudes on screen maybe...seriously whatever Heidi wants to do works for me ;D ----frankly this doesn't even have to be about TVD anymore, could just be any of the ones mentioned in general. The idea kind of exploded haha
  3.  Reading & Writing YA
ON MANCAKES AND CHOICES.

Hi! Thanks so much for having me!

You have put me in a terrible position of choosing between telling you more about my Spellspinner Series and its interactive choices and writing about DAMON and TVD?! How can you do this to me?!

To protest such cruel and unusual punishment I will touch on both.

What I love about writing my Spellspinner Series for Coliloquy is that I get to explore Lily’s choices. Does she want to follow hot warlock Logan into the woods or be a good little witch and return to her coven meeting? In life I often find I want to do both. I’d like to be both “bad” and “good”. Be the one who is both admired for her fine moral convictions and the girl who is envied for taking risks. In real life, we don’t get to go down both paths, but in Witch’s Brew and The Gleaning and (sekrit titled) Spell 3 YOU DO.

Which leads me, inevitably, to Vampire Diaries and the love triangle between between Elena, Damon and Stefan. Remember the scene where Elena comes down the stairs after the most recent bloody conflict and Stefan pulls her into his secure arms and, though she’s happy to be there, she glances up and sees Damon staring into her with THOSE EYES? YOU KNOW she wants to break free of Stefan and run to him yet also wants to stay in his safe arms.

Elena has to make the hard choices and choose one over the other.

Lily…sort of gets to have her man-cake and eat it too.

(I can’t believe I just wrote man-cake.)

Thanks so much for having me and I hope you gobble up Spellspinners 3 (witch launches soon!)

Sea
Add to Goodreads

Still haunted by nightmares of her mother's death, fifteen-year-old Sienna Jones reluctantly travels to Indonesia with her father's relief team to help tsunami orphans with their post traumatic stress disorder-something Sienna knows a lot about. Since her mother's plane went missing over the Indian Ocean three years before, Sienna doesn't do anything if it involves the ocean or planes, so this trip is a big step forward.
But the last thing she expects is to fall for Deni, a brooding Indonesian boy who lives at the orphanage, and just so happens to be HOT. When Deni hears a rumor that his father may be alive, Sienna doesn't think twice about running away with him to the epicenter of the disaster. Unfortunately, what they find there could break both their hearts.
A compelling summer romance, Sea marks the arrival of a stunning new voice in YA.

Witch's Brew (The Spellspinners of Melas County #1)
Add to Goodreads

The Spellspinners of Melas County is a fantasy YA romance series about a witch, a warlock, and their fight for their forbidden but prophesied love.

Once soulmates, the witch and warlock covens of the California coast have been estranged for a century. Raised to hate each other, their teenagers meet in the Solstice Stones, a magical battleground where they draw energy from each other to maintain their balance. 16 year olds Logan and Lily have spent years training for their first Stones…only to discover just days before that the enemy may not be what either of them had thought.

In Witch’s Brew, Lily is torn between her feelings for Logan and her coven’s need to know who—or what—he is. The young lovers race against time, their distrust for each other, and the powerful influence of their elders to unravel the mystery of their pasts before their future is destroyed.

This is an Active Fiction title
"Active fiction" is a new type of e-reading experience that allows the reader and the author to interact with each other and the text in new and different ways.

In Witch’s Brew, Lily and Logan's fate is already decided, but Heidi explores several different possible pathways for how they get there. She shares scenes that wouldn’t normally fit in a book format and gives readers more precious moments between the two young lovers. As the series progresses, you'll see some normal narrative forms, interspersed with smaller scenes, alternate points of view, and a lot of "what if" scenarios.

And it's sequel The Gleaning:

Review: Fallout (Crank #3) by Ellen Hopkins

 Source: Borrowed from the library.
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Release Date: Already Released.
Number of Pages: 662 (Hardcover)

Goodreads links to other books in this series:
Crank (Crank #1)
Glass (Crank #2)

Note: I'm leaving out the description for this one because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the first books. It's probably not a huge shock who the new narrators for this book are, but I'll leave the decision to check out the description. You can find it in the Goodreads link above. I've also included the links for the first two books in the series for anyone who hasn't read them yet. :)

This is truly an amazing series, and it makes me so glad that I first gave poetic verse a chance because if I hadn't, I wouldn't have read these awesome books! :D

I'm not going to say too much because I will totally spoil the earlier books in this trilogy if I do, but I'll say a little. First, I loved that Fallout changes POV. The first two books were in Kristina's POV, which I loved, but in Fallout it switches to the POV of three other characters...I'm not going to tell you who they are (I'm sure the description will tell you anyway, but still :P), but I loved how by switching POV it showed the ways that addiction affects others, not just the addict. I also really enjoyed that throughout Fallout there were news articles that had little stories about characters from the previous two books. It was a fantastic way for the reader to become aware of what had happened to them, and so creative...I loved it! :D

This series is definitely intense and covers serious topics, and I love the way that Ellen Hopkins has written them. I find her writing style to be so beautiful, and it is so easy to lose yourself in these books. I've been so fortunate to never have faced addiction myself, but these books show how easy it could be to succumb to an addiction or become addicted to something, and they show how others can be affected by someone's addiction. I think this series gives voice to addicts, and people who have been affected by the addiction of others, and I find that to be so powerful and inspiring. This is definitely a series that readers can relate to, and even if Kristina and her family's story isn't something that you can directly relate to, it is something that you can read and find power in. Maybe you've considered drugs yourself, faced addiction, had family that faced addiction, or maybe, like most teens, you've faced peer pressure. In that way, even if you haven't done the same things as Kristina or faced the same things, you can look at her experience and the way it affected the people around her, and you can be confident in the good choices you've made, or you can find the strength to make better choices and not end up in the same situations that she found herself in. I find the fact that this series can inspire all that to be pretty remarkable, and it makes an already amazing series even better.

In her author's note of Fallout, Ellen Hopkins said that she wanted this "book to be the most powerful of the three", and I think she's done that! I've loved all three books, but I definitely found the conclusion to be even more powerful because it shows just how much Kristina's story isn't her own, and that the choices she made for herself had repercussions that affected a lot of people she cared about...and I found that to be incredibly powerful. Overall, I love this series, and I would definitely recommend it, especially if you haven't tried out poetic verse yet, and are a little unsure. Ellen Hopkins was the first author I read who wrote in poetic verse, and I've never looked back! She's a wonderful author, and if you're looking to try out poetic verse, she's a great place to start because you'll get a beautifully and creatively written series, and a truly remarkable story all in one package. :D

Have you read anything by Ellen Hopkins? Are you a fan of her, too?
I love books like Fallout, and the rest of this series, that make you think about things like addiction. It challenges you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and try to feel some compassion or understanding for them. Does anyone else feel that way about books with serious subject matter, like addiction?

Some Books I Can't Wait to Get My Hands On!

It's been a while since I've posted about books that I'm really excited for, so I thought I would share some of the books that I'm really excited for. I've got quite a few, so I'm gonna break them into a few posts to keep you all from getting overwhelmed. :D

All book descriptions are from Goodreads. These aren't in any specific order, but I definitely want to read them all! :)

Glitch (Glitch #1)
by Heather Anastasiu

In the Community, there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network. When Zoe starts to malfunction (or "glitch"), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers. As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse. In this action-packed debut, Glitch begins an exciting new young adult trilogy.
Release Date:  August 7, 2012
Publisher:  St. Martin's Press

Why I Want to Read it:

This amazing cover is what first caught my eye, but after reading the description I got even more excited for this release. It sounds like an amazing story! :D

Black City (Black City Chronicles #1)
by Elizabeth Richards

So hard she doesn't even notice the good things right under her nose: a sweet little future stepsister who is just about the only person she's ever liked, a best friend (even though Whitley swears she doesn't "do" friends), and a smoking-hot guy who isn't her stepbrother...at least, not yet. But the Ruin is far more dangerous than any of them can imagine. They are hunted by fierce animals escaped from zoos and circuses. They must raid zombie-infested towns for food and medical supplies. They discover the very real truth in the old saying: In the Rot and Ruin…everything wants to kill you.
And what is happening to the zombies? Swarms of them are coming from the east, devouring everything in their paths. These zoms are different. Faster, smarter, infinitely more dangerous. Has the zombie plague mutated, or is there something far more sinister behind this new invasion of the living dead?

Alice in Zombieland
(White Rabbit Chronicles #1)
by Gena Showalter

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

For Darkness Shows the Stars
by Diana Peterfreund

Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.

But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret—one that could change their society . . . or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she’s lost him forever.
