Playing the Field Blog Tour: Review & Guest Post!

Playing the Field
Diamonds and Dugouts #2
By: Jennifer Seasons
Blurb
Single mother Sonny Miller has spent years avoiding love. A rotten childhood and an even rottener ex-boyfriend left her determined to protect her son—and herself—against the risks of romance. That is, until hotshot ballplayer JP Trudeau swaggers into her carefully constructed life, all sin-with-me eyes and irresistible grin. Sonny can't help but feel drawn to the sexy, confident man, even as every fiber of her being tells her to keep running the bases . . .

JP is known for being fast on his feet, not fast with his heart. But meeting Sonny and her boy sparks something in him—something he's never felt before, not from all the cleat-chasers in the major leagues. Sonny may be hell-bent on keeping him at arm's length no matter what, but this rookie has a plan. To get the girl, he must step up to the plate and convince her to take another chance on love . . . before this game gets rained out.

MY REVIEW
I haven't kept my love of sports romances a secret, so it should come as no surprise that when I read the blurb for Playing the Field...I knew that I absolutely had to read it! :D I really enjoyed it, and I think I've definitely found another new sports romance author to keep my eye on...and I'll be going back to read the first book in this series as soon as I can!

All in all, I thought that Playing the Field was great. JP though, he was AMAZING....boy was he ever. JP and fantastic, sexy, male leads just like him are the reason that I enjoy this sub-genre of romance so very much. He was a cocky guy, so sexy and he knew it (haha)...yes, but he definitely had a good head on his shoulders, and he was so thoughtful. I pretty much fell for him right from the start...I don't know how Sonny held out for so long. :P haha I liked Sonny, but she did frustrate me and her reluctance to hear JP out kind of held me back at times during this book, but in the end she made me proud. :) I absolutely adored the two of them together, and once you added in Sonny's son Charlie, they made an awesome trio. I also enjoyed JP's budding relationship with Charlie, and all of the friendships in this book, I especially loved getting to see JP and his teammates interact. I thought Jennifer Seasons did a great job writing friendships and with the way that she developed relationships, too. I definitely got attached to the characters and their lives very quickly!

Overall, I thought that Playing the Field was a fantastic sports romance, and I absolutely loved JP. For the most part, I loved Sonny, too, but I did feel like she overreacted a bit and kind of just expected JP to be the one to fix everything...or she was just gonna let it all fall apart, ignore it, and go back to the way things were pre-JP...thankfully, he didn't let that happen. :P Even with Sonny being silly at times, I was still rooting for her and JP to work everything out, for the two of them, but also for Charlie's sake. I loved how he was getting closer to JP, and I thought it was amazing to see the three of them open up to each other. I'd recommend this one to other sports romance fans out there, and to any fans of romance who like seeing two great people find love...especially if you like hunky, wonderful male leads. ;)

Jennifer Seasons' Guest Post:
"
HOW I KEEP MY WRITING DIFFERENT"

I always wanted to be a writer.  Well, not always.  There were those early years when I wanted desperately to be Dolly Parton or Reba McEntire.  My mom’s hairbrush got a lot of air time back then.

But sometime in middle school I discovered my mom’s romances and devoured them like they were chocolate truffles.  I couldn’t get enough and spent years growing a pretty impressive book collection.  The romance genre became my best friend and I immersed myself in all those wildly romantic stories.

I learned how to write them, how to play within the formula.  I even tried my hand at writing a Regency set historical.  Let’s just say there’s a reason I write contemporaries.  So much better.

Then I got divorced.

My life went haywire as I struggled to adjust to life as a single mother.  Life took over and years passed while I found myself and pursued my education.  Instead of reading about life, I was out there struggling to live it and learning some really hard, very valuable lessons in the process.

And then a few years after that I met my own real life romance hero and married him.  We set up shop and had a baby together.  While I was home with her taking online college classes I decided to dust off an old partial manuscript of mine that had been shoved into the recesses of my hard drive and finish it.  That book became STEALING HOME.

What I think makes my writing different is that I hadn’t read a romance novel in over seven years.  A lot can change in the market in that amount of time as we all know.  But I knew the formula.  So when I sat down and finished that novel I wrote from a perspective outside the genre.  I wrote from life.

There was nothing I compared my writing to, nothing to use as a blueprint.  It was just me and my experiences, along with my romance reading history.  All of it combined to create a story that is something a little different.

Today I read romances and oh, how I’ve missed them.  But I read outside the subgenre that I write.  Historicals are my favorite.  Especially Scottish ones.  I have a serious thing for men in kilts. Yowza.  And Russian peasants, but that’s a whole other story.

By living life and having all those experiences, then going back to writing I’ve been able to create stories that are unique and refreshing to read.  And hopefully you all agree.

About the Author

Danielle A. Elwood is a blogger by trade who started writing her first romance novel Take Me Out as a hobby in 2012. She is a avid romance novel lover herself,  which inspired her to take the leap into writing her own. She resides in Daytona Beach, Florida with her family. Some of her inspirations in writing include Abbi Glines, Colleen Hoover, Laura Kaye, Melony Anne, and Jamie McGuire.

And now that you know a bit about Take Me Out and its author, here is your excerpt:
“I think it is time we say goodnight,” I said with a frown as I got up off the black leather sectional and headed towards the door with Bentley.  I was a little light-headed, but I attributed that to the six pack or Sam Adams we split during the game.
“Thank you for such a wonderful evening, Charlie. I would love to see you again if you would like,” he said, staring at the tips of his shoes and ran his fingers through his hair. He appeared worried that I would run after our deep conversation. He looked unsure of himself, self-conscious, completely unlike his usual domineering attitude.
He held my hand on the way to the front door. At his touch, all rational thought left me. I needed him to have his lips on me. I was aching to feel more of him against more of me. What had gotten into me?
Once we reached our destination, he leaned down and planted a single soft kiss on my lips, just like he did that night at Fenway. His lips were so soft and the electricity between us was beyond belief. It left me wanting more. When he respectfully pulled away like most modest girls would hope for, I blurted out, “ That's it?”
Also enjoy these lovely little promo teasers!

Wowza...those little teasers definitely have me wanting to read Take Me Out...and they make me want to get to know Charlie really bad!! :D

Blog Tour Review: Over the Rainbow by Brian Rowe

Source: Received an ebook to participate in the blog tour and give an honest review.
Release Date: August 6, 2013
Number of Pages: 260 (Paperback)

Description from Goodreads:
A modern re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz!

Zippy Green never meant to fall in love with a girl, but when she does, her ultra-conservative father tries to send her to anti-gay camp. At the Kansas City airport, however, she hides inside a giant suitcase and sneaks onto an airplane headed not to the camp, but to Seattle, where her online love Mira lives. Halfway through the flight, the plane barrels out of control and crashes into the ground, knocking her unconscious.

When Zippy awakens, she finds that most of the passengers have vanished. She doesn’t know what’s happened, but she’s determined to find out. She begins a quest on foot toward Seattle, and along the way, she meets a teenager with a concussion, a homeless man with a heart condition, a child without a shred of bravery, and a terrier named Judy. Together the group discovers that more than two-thirds of the world's population have mysteriously disappeared. But that's only the beginning...

All Zippy wants is to find her Mira, but before she can she has to contend with two outside forces. The first is her homophobic father, who does everything in his power to keep her from the girl she loves. And the second is extinct creatures of all shapes and sizes, including living, breathing dinosaurs, which have replaced the missing population.
MY REVIEW
I have been intrigued with Over the Rainbow ever since I heard about its Kickstarter campaign and helped back it...and now that I've read it, I have to say that it was pretty amazing, and I am definitely proud to have helped Brian Rowe get Zippy's story out into the world. Not only did this story broach the subject of homophobia and the heinous idea that someone can be "straightened out" as Zippy's dad put it, it also just told a wonderful story about overcoming obstacles, adversity, and finding the one you love.

I absolutely loved Over the Rainbow. The characters were wonderful, and I loved the parallels between it and the Wizard of Oz. Zippy's friends were all clearly in homage to the group that Dorothy has with her in. Frankie = Scarecrow, Mr. Balm = The Tinman, Elle = The Cowardly Lion, Judy = Toto and I also presumed that the dog alluded to the wonderful Judy Garland as well, and of course, Zippy acts as Dorothy and her father as the Wicked Witch of the West. I loved that the characters shared similarities with those in the Wizard of Oz, but I also loved that they fully became characters of their own and I loved the relationships that they all had with Zippy. I also enjoyed Zippy and Mira's relationship. I loved getting to read their email exchanges and I won't tell you if they actually meet up because that's totally a spoiler...but I will say that this book definitely does have a happy ending, so that may give you a hint about all that. ;)

Overall, I thought that Over the Rainbow was a truly wonderful story. I also appreciated Brian Rowe's efforts to get it out there! There really aren't many stories with lesbian main characters, and I may not be a lesbian myself, but I really don't think having a different sexual orientation from the narrator will hinder readers in any way, and it really shouldn't. Zippy isn't a stereotype, and she isn't defined by her sexual orientation...she's just herself, and she's trying to be happy, and to be happy she needs to be with the girl she loves, even if her father thinks the fact that she loves girls is a complete blasphemy.

Over the Rainbow is set in 1999 (for the most part, it also has several flashbacks that go further back), but I think that the different reactions to both Zippy and Frankie's sexual orientation are definitely authentic, and I like to think that we have come some way from there...and hopefully, with fantastic books like this, those that might think poorly on others based on their sexual orientation will finally see that who we love and are attracted to shouldn't be what defines us, and it really shouldn't be something that we judge each other for. We're all people who deserve to be treated with kindness, equality, and allowed the freedoms and rights that we all have been granted thanks to the people who have come before us.

I would recommend Over the Rainbow to anyone who enjoys a story that deals with overcoming obstacles to reach someone you love with the help of your friends. I also think fans of the Wizard of Oz who like quirky narrators, or people who like journeys and stories about friendship will enjoy this one. Also as I mentioned, the narrator is a lesbian in this book, so I definitely have to mention that anyone looking for interesting stories dealing with overcoming judgement and facing adversity because of sexual orientation will like this. Plus...there are dinosaurs, and some pretty trippy Alice in Wonderland-like moments, which I thought were pretty awesome. I loved it though, and I hope that you give it the chance and that you love it, too!

Charmed Excerpt

Frankie
Sugar. I needed more of it if I was going to make it through this day. The chocolate croissant and caramel latte I had this morning wasn’t near enough to combat the massive lines, the noise, and disgruntled people that filled the DMV. Whatever in hell made me think that working at the Department of Motor Vehicles, here in Alaska, was a good idea?
Maybe it was the good pay. Maybe it was because I got weekends off.
Or maybe it was because I had a moment of temporary insanity that unfortunately coincided with me saying, “I accept,” when I got offered this job.
Besides the fact that the lines were permanently out the door, the computer systems were temperamental at best, and my boss was a complete broom rider, my stash of chocolate and Sour Patch Kids was empty.
That meant someone was going to die today.
I glanced back up at the ninety-year-old woman whose head barely cleared the insanely high counters we stood behind and tried to hold on to my patience. “Mrs. Eldridge,” I said extremely loudly. “Like I told you last week, you have to go and get new glasses before I can renew your driver’s license.”
“I have new glasses,” she insisted.
            Lord, save me now.
“You got those ten years ago. You need some from this year.” Or decade I finished silently.
She shuffled out of the line like a turtle and I took her slowness as a chance to really search beneath my station and chair for a long-lost piece of sugar. Anything. Even a stray jellybean would likely find its way into my blood stream at this point. Of course there was nothing. I briefly considered hiding beneath my desk until five o’clock. My car. I had an emergency stash in my car. I glanced at my watch. I had another hour until I was able to take a fifteen-minute break.
A pair of black pumps appeared before me and I inwardly groaned. Just what I needed—a run-in with the witch. But instead of being greeted by her condescending, screechy tone, an icy-cold red can appeared before me.
Hallelujah, praise the Lord, it was caffeine and sugar!
I snatched the Coke out of her hand and popped the top, taking a large, satisfying chug. The bubbles crowded down my throat, slightly burning, and I took another swallow.
“I love you,” I murmured to Lela, the girl who worked right beside me.
She laughed. “I know that look when I see it.” Then she straightened and whispered. “Witch alert.”
I shot up, my head bumping into the counter on the way. I wanted to shout out in pain, but I clamped my mouth shut, not wanting to draw the attention of my boss, Satan’s assistant.
I turned back to my line, my eyes colliding with a broad chest. I looked up, and the can slid out of my hand, hitting the floor with a thud while fizzy liquid poured over my favorite boots.
            I didn’t even notice.
“What the hell are you doing here?” I growled as I looked around for something sharp I could stab him with.
A thick brow arched. “So is this where you spend your days? As if the DMV isn’t a horrible enough place to visit without the poor people of Alaska having to tolerate you.”
There wasn’t enough sugar on this planet that would save him. I reached out and picked up the black phone. If I couldn’t bludgeon him to death here at my place of employment, then I could at least call the cops. I began dialing, but he reached over and cut the connection.
I slammed the phone down on his hand, which was still pressed on the hang-up button. Breath hissed between his teeth and his green eyes shot to mine. “Careful, George, you’re pissing off the wrong man.”
            “My name isn’t George.”
He shrugged, pulling his hand away from the phone. “When you have a man’s name, does it really matter?”

Catching Liam Blog Tour: The Top Ten Ways to Catch and Release Boys by Jillian Nichols (Guest Post by author Sophia Bleu)

The Top Ten Ways to Catch and Release Boys by Jillian Nichols

Boy catching is serious business, and like any good business, a girl’s gotta have her policies and plans in place.  Or maybe it’s more like a sport.  Regardless, there are rules.  My best friends and I created boy catching out of need to have a little fun without being bogged down in emotionally draining relationships.  No fighting or meeting parents or awkward break-ups.  If you follow these simple tips, you’ll be catching and releasing boys like a pro in no time.

1. Avoid loose change.  You know the guys that creep on you on the dancefloor?  The ones that came alone, waiting for a girl to grind up on?  Throw those back early on.

2.  Ask for his number.  If you want to stay in charge, you have to be the one with the digits.

3.  Never catch from the inner circle.  So that guy in your econ class is cute, and your co-worker at the coffee shop has nail-worthy abs?  Enjoy that candy from the sidelines, ladies.  It can be nearly impossible to successfully release someone you see several times a week.  You’ve been warned.

4.  Buy your own drinks.  Nothing’s sexier than an independent woman, and you’ll never feel bad for walking away.

5.  If you can stand it, go back to his place instead of yours.  This is a safe way to make sure he doesn’t show up on your doorstep unexpected, but it’s also a gamble.  Have you seen some of guys’ dorms?  And word to the wise, if he lives in a frat house, just say no.

6.  Schedule early classes, or at least get up and pretend to have class.  If he’s still there in the morning, start freaking out when the alarm goes off.  He’ll be confused all the way to the door.

7.  Keep a pic of a wedding dress on your phone.  Show it to him when you want him to leave.

8. Your roommate is your best friend.  A pissed-off roommate can send a guy heading straight to the door.  Even if you get along with your roommate, establish a plan of action for the clingy types.

9.  Fake a call to your mom.  Want to get rid of a guy fast?  Pretend you’re calling your mom to dish on your night, throw in lots of talk about “the one” and “fate.”  Cast meaningful glances at him.  If he doesn’t seem phased, tell “your mom” to hold on for a sec and ask him what he’s doing for Christmas, add “my mom wants to know.”

10.  Don’t let him fall asleep.  Use any or all of the above to get him out before his mind hits the snooze button.  Other easy ways to keep him from crashing: hide your pillows, spill a glass of water on the bed, two words: footie pajamas.

From the author:
When I was asked to think about the top 10 rules for boy catching, I had to channel Jillian, the leading expert on the sport.  I think some of her advice is spot on, but some of it sounded like a warped Maxim article.  So if you’re thinking of getting into boy catching, keep in mind that you’re not only playing with your head, you’re playing with your heart, too.

Catching Liam by Sophia Bleu
Publication date:  Summer 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Synopsis:
Twenty-one year-old Jillian Nichols only has one rule when it comes to boys: catch and release. Boy-catching isn't just a game for Jillian and her friends, it's a lifestyle. After all, boys might be good for a dance or a drink and certainly a little under-cover action of the scandalous variety, but expect much else and you're bound for heart ache.

So when her best friends and fellow boy catchers start dropping like flies junior year, Jillian is determined to keep boys in her bedroom and out of her heart. Until she meets Liam McAvoy, the kind of guy that sticks around to make waffles and who can't—or perhaps won't—take a hint.

Study abroad student Liam doesn't want to be another notch on Jillian's bedpost. Actually he has much more interesting ideas for Jillian and her bedposts, but his student visa's set expiration date means he can't promise her forever. That doesn't mean he's going to walk away from the challenge of discovering why Jillian is hell-bent at keeping people at a distance.

Before long, neither is sure who is catching who—or if they're playing for keeps. Jillian knows one thing though: falling in love will not only break the only rule of boy-catching, it could also break her heart.
