Stacking the Shelves (30)

Stacking the Shelves is Tynga's Reviews' version of In My Mailbox (from The Story Siren and inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie).

Stacking the Shelves is a way to share the books that you're adding to your physical and virtual bookshelves. It's easy to participate. You just make your own post, and link it to the main post over at Tynga's Reviews. Also, in case you're curious, Tynga's post for it goes up on Saturdays, but you can post it any day that you like. :) You can find out more about participating by reading the Stacking the Shelves Launch post.

I skipped my STS and Monday posts before I went to Mexico and while I was gone, so this is for the past three weeks I guess. :P

Book Blitz: Come Back to Me by Coleen Patrick (Excerpt & Giveaway!)

Come Back to Me by Coleen Patrick
Publication date: March, 2013
Genre: YA Contemporary

Synopsis:
Whitney Denison can’t wait to start over.

She thought she had everything under control, that her future would always include her best friend Katie… Until everything changed.

Now her life in Bloom is one big morning after hangover, filled with regret, grief, and tiny pinpricks of reminders that she was once happy. A happy she ruined. A happy she can’t fix.

So, she is counting down the days until she leaves home for Colson University, cramming her summer with busywork she didn’t finish her senior year, and taking on new hobbies that involve glue and glitter, and dodging anyone who reminds her of her old life.

When she runs into the stranger who drove her home on graduation night, after she’d passed out next to a ditch, she feels herself sinking again. The key to surviving the summer in Bloom is unraveling whatever good memories she can from that night.

But in searching for answers, she’ll have to ask for help and that means turning to Evan, the stranger, and Kyle, Katie’s ex-boyfriend. Suddenly, life flips again, and Whitney finds herself on not only the precipice of happy but love, too, causing her to question whether she can trust her feelings, or if she is falling into her old patterns of extremes.

As she uncovers the truth about her memories, Whitney sees that life isn’t all or nothing, and that happy isn’t something to wait for, that instead, happy might just be a choice.

Excerpt from Chapter 14:
I went to the rec center.

The front desk pointed me down a checkerboard-tiled hallway. Halfway down, I heard guitar strumming and a mish mosh of clanging tambourines. I transferred the paper bag with the last muffin to my other hand and swiped my damp palm against my shorts. I moved toward the music, my gaze darting from one closed door to the next, until I found the right classroom. There, I peeked into the square window on the door.

Evan.

He stood in the middle of the room, chairs pushed to the edges, orchestrating a dozen or so kids holding tambourines, triangles, and recorders. The sound they made was loud, shy of any sort of regular rhythm, much like my heart suddenly, but they were all smiling, including Evan. He clapped his hands over his head, while the guitar strapped around him swayed. His shirt was blue—another button down, sleeves rolled to his forearm and shirttail hanging over his shorts as they played to their finale. The tallest boy crashed his cymbals together while the kids with tambourines shook them wildly in the air.

The butterflies in my stomach joined the ruckus, and I pressed a palm to my stomach. It was just nerves thinking about our forthcoming conversation. It wasn’t going to be easy to ask him about that night.

A girl in braids, the one holding the triangle, pointed at me and, in the moment, before Evan turned, I felt the muscles in my legs tense, but I stayed still. I wasn’t going to run the other way anymore, not when I wanted answers. Instead, I waved, and Evan raised his hand before heading in my direction.

“All right guys.” He opened the door wide. “I’ll see you Friday.”

One by one, the kids streamed past me, chattering to one another. I focused on the tops of their heads, unsure of how I would start my conversation with Evan.

“Hi.” I said, when the last kid was halfway down the hallway. Then I got tongue-tied. I smiled at him, but my lips trembled, drawn up by sudden nerves.

Evan put out his hand for me to shake. I smiled, scrunching up my nose.

“Hi,” he said. “I’m Evan Foster.”

I laughed. A slow smile spread on his face, and I felt the butterfly orchestra in my gut move into crescendo mode. I held out my own hand. His hand closed over mine. It was warm, strong.

“Whitney Denison,” I said, feeling a little bit silly. That turned out to be good though, because as I took a deep breath, my nerves evened out. “Whitney Elizabeth Morgan Denison.”

Evan raised an eyebrow. “Oh, well in that case, I’m Evan Sebastian Foster.”

“Sebastian?”

“Yes, my mom was really into The Little Mermaid.”

Again I laughed, but then stopped. “What? Wait, you’re serious?”

“Yeah. She named me after Sebastian the crab.”

“And you tell everyone this story?”

“Not really.” He watched me in a way that sent my heart on a faster pace. “So, girl-with-two-middle-names…”

“I don’t think I’m ready for you to be calling me by my Native American name.” He grinned and glanced down at the floor for a moment. Then, he reached a hand in his jeans, pulling out his car keys. Immediately, I was disappointed. I didn’t want to be done talking with him. I was just getting started.

I remembered the bag in my hand and held it up to him. “Are you hungry?”

Deeper We Fall Blog Tour: "The New Adult Genre" Guest Post

The New Adult Genre

New Adult. Just a few years ago, you would have said those two words and everyone would have gone, "huh?" But now you can't drop by twitter, or read a book blog without seeing it everywhere. Even the mainstream media has picked up on it. We hear it talked and speculated about, but what is it?

Here are a few things New Adult is not: Erotica, sexed up Young Adult, or smut.

New Adult is a category. You can have a book in any genre that also fits that category. You can have New Adult Contemporary Romance, which is what I write. You can also have New Adult Fantasy, Dystopian, Sci fi. New Adult literature encompasses that tricky age between youth and adulthood. It's a middle ground for ages 17-26(ish). Those ages can change depending on the location of the story. In some countries, kids go to college at younger ages, so they would be in the New Adult age range sooner than in the United States. It's more about the stage of life than your age.

New Adult is that first time you are really out on your own. You're away from your parents and allowed to make adult decisions that have adult consequences and usually, you're not equipped to deal with them. Add in some of the angst of adolescence and you have a perfect storm for writing fiction.

For me, my college years were some of the best of my life. It was like a sleepover every night. We could do what we wanted and our parents would never find out (unless we got arrested, of course). We were responsible for ourselves, and that was an intoxicating feeling.

I'd been wanting, ever since I decided to make writing books my career, to write a story that would recapture those feelings I had in college. But I had only written young adult paranormal books up until that point and I thought contemporary was out of my wheelhouse. I couldn't imagine writing a story where I couldn't just make someone a vampire out of the blue to get myself out of a situation. I'd tried to write a contemporary young adult novel, but gave up because it was just a bunch of angst-ing and nothing happened. Then I had an idea one night last June, and I couldn't get it out of my head. I ended up turning on the light and filling notebook pages with the start of what would become My Favorite Mistake. From that point on, it was like I'd opened the flood gates and at least once a week, sometimes more, I get an idea for a New Adult title.

There is so much freedom, for me as a writer, with New Adult. I don't' have to worry about if my characters are cursing too much, or that the sexiness is going too far. I can throw them into insane situations and watch them try and dig themselves out of it. I can put them through things that a younger teen would never be able to reasonably handle. It's a writer's dream, and I don't see myself running out of ideas anytime soon.

Description from Goodreads:

For months, I've been seeing Deeper We Fall on other blogs, on Amazon, on Goodreads....all over the place, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of its blog tour. I thought it sounded fantastic, and I wasn't disappointed. :D

The best part of Deeper We Fall was the characters! Both Zan (Alexander) and Lottie (Charlotte) were amazing characters and I loved getting to read the story in both of their points of view. :D I also loved their names...I'm such a sucker for great nicknames and Zan and Lottie were good ones! :D Their friends were also amazing...honestly all of the characters except for Zan's brother Zack were fantastic characters, and I loved the friendship between them all. Chelsea Cameron did an amazing job developing her secondary characters while still giving enough attention to Lottie and Zan, and I absolutely loved that...it also makes me super eager for book 2, Faster We Burn! :D

This book was mostly about internal struggles, and struggling to cope with the past and move forward. I really enjoyed seeing Lottie and Zan's relationship change and I loved how they helped each other heal. The only thing that kind of bugged me was when Lottie tried to keep Zan away...more than once. :P It was pretty much the only thing that bothered me throughout the whole book though, and thankfully it didn't last the whole book. :P haha

Overall, I really enjoyed Deeper We Fall. I thought the characters were amazing, and I loved the developing relationships between the main characters, Zan and Lottie, but I also loved the ones between the secondary characters. :D I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books from Chelsea Cameron because she does an amazing job at developing characters that you genuinely care about, and while the struggles got on my nerves at times, I still absolutely loved the characters and was rooting for them to finally be happy together. I'd recommend this one to those wanting to try something in the New Adult genre, and to those that enjoy character-driven plots and romances with happy endings. :)

What do you think?
Have you read Deeper We Fall yet?
If you haven't, does it sound like something you want to try?
And do you have any New Adult books to recommend? I'm always up for learning about new ones!
