I first stumbled upon L. J. Shen early last year when one of her books, VICIOUS, came out...I DEVOURED and absolutely fell in love with it, and I also completely and utterly fell in love with her writing style! Fast-forward about a year, and I'm still just as in love with Vicious and L. J. Shen's writing style as I was then...probably even more so actually! Because I love her so freaking much I've been eagerly waiting to read MIDNIGHT BLUE for months now...and I pretty much jumped up and down when I ended up with an early copy of it!
Once I started reading MIDNIGHT BLUE I couldn't put it down! It was an absolutely wonderful ride! I thought that Indie was amazing! I loved how she was so sure of who she was and how even when she caved into some of Alex's demands, she always remained true to herself! I loved how passionate she was about creating her dresses, and how much her style and her family meant to her. I especially loved how much she cared for others. She had a giving and generous spirit, but was also feisty and not afraid to speak her mind...I loved her to bits!
Alex, on the other hand, was not so easy to love. He was always sexy, and his passion for his music was AMAZING, but he was abrasive, and a bit all over the place because of his struggles with addiction. His music really brought him alive though, and L. J. Shen did a beautiful and remarkable job at writing about how music affected Alex...those were hands down my favourite parts of the story apart from the romance bits! The lyrics, and Alex's thoughts as he performed and wrote his music were seriously mesmerizing...those passages were the ones that constantly reminded me how skilled and amazing L. J. Shen is at writing! Those are the parts that made me love Alex for more than his sexy appearance, too...it gave us and Indie a peek into the man he could be.
Now that I've gushed about both of our leads...I have to say that I freaking loved them together even more! Indie's calming persona was the perfect balm to Alex's roughness, and she helped bring out a clarity in him that wasn't there when he was alone. When he was alone he was cruel and constantly lashed out at others, but the more he opened up to Indie, the stronger and more self-possessed he became! I found Alex's addiction hard to stomach at times, and his drive for revenge made me a bit sad to see, but I was so happy the more he opened up to Indie...their relationship was somehow dark and angsty while also being sensual, sexy and super sweet!
Overall, I loved MIDNIGHT BLUE! VICIOUS is still my favourite of L. J. Shen's books, but if you loved VICIOUS, I think you'll definitely enjoy MIDNIGHT BLUE, too! I thought that the romance was spectacular! I absolutely loved Indie and Alex, and I loved how intense their romance was. I really, really loved how L. J. Shen expressed Alex's music--it was mesmerizing and I loved every single minute of it! If you love angsty, passionate romances with lots of sexual tension, a bit of animosity (not quite hate-to-love, but definitely some stubbornness and anger), and darkness in your leads' pasts, then MIDNIGHT BLUE is perfect for you! And if you love music, you'll love it even more! :D
